After leaving the church Shiro's path was determined. He will fight in the grail war. And while returning home with Rin he already faces his first opponent: a giant controlled by a young girl with white hair. Illyasviel von Einzbern. Her servant is incredibly powerful and attacks Saber without mercy. Saber is on the verge of defeat, but before the final blow lands, Shiro interferes and is mortally wounded.

Ideals
In Fate, Shiro had to realize what it meant to be a hero. It's one thing to say you will be something, it's something else to fully understand what that is. Fate deals with dedication towards that goal. What if everything you wanted to be was realized, and distorted to the point where you hated your very existence. If you could go back in time, would you'd stop yourself from going down that path?
As the saying goes, hindsight is 20/20, but Shiro understands if he realizes ideals, it will become twisted in ways which will torment him. It's one thing for others to tell you not to do something, it's another thing entirely to witness your future self saying that, as if speaking to a mirror.
