During the late 1990s personal domains became fashionable. It sounded good;
stake your claim to get your own piece of the Internet. Some hosts allowed custom
error pages. Being a smart ass by nature, unorthadox error pages were a natrual
fit. The 404 for scythe.net became somewhat popular in articles about custom 404
pages. That's fine, but as no one knew how this page was served, they began
purposely using bad URLs to look at the 404. As an administrator who checks error
logs, this is annoying.
