Home cooking is something tastes just right. You can have the same meal anywhere, but it's just not the same. That's my feeling on 80s-90s mecha anime. I'm not going to pretend they were that good, but there was a certain something I liked about them. I haven't felt that way watching any mecha anime post 2000. Until Heroic Age. Finally, a title that doesn't require modern anime gimmicks as a crutch!

Heroic Age takes root in the kind of tales told in Greek mythology (not literally just in feel), but done as a sci-fi anime. It's a sweeping epic tale that is involved, but not so overly complex that it strangles itself trying to live up to plot twists that can't make sense (like many titles do). The story is fairly linear. Inserted into this world are Age and Dhianeila. Oh, and those "other guys" who are basically peripherals. Age is unfamiliar with the ways of men, but unlike the feral child dope I'd expected, Age is a pretty likable guy. Dhianeila is the embodiment of hope befitting the perfect princess. It's important to keep in mind the idealized mythical theme of Heroic Age, because it can make these two hard to accept other wise. Even then the Dhianeila worship in this show gets to eye rolling proportions quite often.

The rest of the cast doesn't really play much of a role. Instead they fill slots. This doesn't make them bad, but they aren't the strong point of the show. In some ways I liked this too. Heroic Age has a hint of romance between some of the characters, but at no point does anyone in the show simply throw themselves at their love interest. THAT'S a rarity now days.

The designs are very nice. Animation is a little mixed. Most regular movement isn't that interesting, however this show really shows how computers can be leveraged in modern anime. I'm talking about freaking epic space battles! There are other anime titles better than Heroic Age in this category in movies and OVAs, but on a TV budget? Not even close. They're so great I've mostly forgotten this show hits one of my big pet peeves: giant robots in space.
