Nuku Nuku OAV

Summary: >

Ryuunosuke and his dad were fleeing the evil tyranny of Mishima heavy industries (led by Ryuu's mother none the less!) with the experimental battle android which his father Natsume couldn't allow to be used for evil purposes. During an intense chaise a cat was somehow caught in the crossfire and mortally wounded. Ryuu didn't want the cat to die, but how to save it? Hmm... lets put it's brain in the battle android! From there things get a little weird (yeah, like this was normal to begin with). Ryuu's over-protective mother Akiko is bent on getting her beloved son back, as well as punishing her husband who made off with the android prototype. Of course the android isn't just any android, but is now Super Cat-girl Nuku Nuku! This is one of those situations where the term "dysfunctional family" is a huge understatement, but although Nuku Nuku might be made of steel, she has a soft heart - and just maybe she can help bring them all together... well maybe.

Thoughts: >

All Purpose Cultural Catgirl Nuku Nuku is all about one thing - fun. As an anime that is totally over the top with it's antics, it somehow still manages to retain much of it's charm over the insanity. The overall upbeat mood of the anime makes for a good watch for someone who likes a mix of action and comedy.

The thing to keep in mind about the OAV series is that Nuku Nuku is a title from a throwback era, where a title had perhaps 2-3 releases planned, and more were added on over time (just like Devil Hunter Yohko). Each of the first 3 titles has a stand alone story and theme, but episodes 4-6 have not only a change in story, but a noticeable change in animation style as well. Taking that into consideration it's hard to just lump them all together for a rating. Okay so here is the breakdown. Episodes 1 and 3 were okay, episodes 2 and 5 were pretty good, and I wasn't particular on episodes 4 and 6 (where Emi appears).

The story and extra characters vary from episode to episode, but the overall fun aspect remains intact throughout. Since you can get this entire series as a collection now, it's probably worth your time depending on your taste for anime. Now if you don't think you'll like a "catgirl" anime, then this title might not be for you - although keep in mind that the 'catgirl' attributes aren't the sort of obnoxious pandering you tend to find in more modern anime, but more of a cute fun style. If you are the sort who would like to check out a catgirl anime, then you'll find it hard to resist a catgirl in a mermaid outfit as seen in episode 2!

Overall it's pretty good for a lighter not-so-serious title.
