Mamotte Shugogetten

Summary: >

Shichiri Tasuke is a lone guy attending high school by himself. It seems his father, mother, and sister are all out exploring the world on various adventures. But not him, he has to stay around his rather boring home. Boring that is, until his father sends him a mysterious object. The object in fact contained a moon spirit. Tasuke ends up with even more various spirits, none of whom are very familiar with the modern world, and none of whom seem to get along very well. With all the things happening around Tasuke, probably the most dangerous place for him to be is in his own home!

Thoughts: >

Mamotte Shugogetten you could say is a title you would aim at the sort of person who loves Oh! My Goddess, however never got enough of it. That's a nice way to say it's essentially a ripoff. However sometimes you can take a concept and actually refine and to some extent improve it. That's not what happened here, but it's possible. So taking the Oh! My Goddess line, Tasuke is Keiichi. Shaorin is Belldandy. Keikonitten is Urd. Saorin can summon spirits, and Keikonitten can animate objects. Both of these goddess type people are basically fighting over Tasuke.

So you can see how that's almost up and down the same formula as many other anime have borrowed, but is sort of to the point of carbon copy here. Unfortunately it lacks the charm and finesse to not only improve on the concept, but to even get it to an acceptable level. I suppose there is a point where you try to do something on paper and it just doesn't work in practice. This title wanted to be cute, fun with a dash of romance. It unfortunately was corny, somewhat stupid, and kind of brain dead in its approach.

For instance Shaorin tries to protect Tasuke from misunderstanding that the modern technology of Japan isn't really a threat to him. Okay, that could be a cute thing at the beginning as a minor point once or twice, but when you try to orient an entire episode around that; you're stretching it. Much of the comedy is simplistic slapstick, and honestly that can only go so far with such a title.

So I would personally avoid Mamotte Shugogetten. It never access enough in any aspect to really make it worth watching. Some music is catchy at times. Sometimes it's funny. Sometimes it's cute. But you know, it's just never enough of all of these things like it needed to be. I actually found it sort of unusual that this title which "appears" to be decent quality, never got imported into the U.S. It gives me faith that the anime industry may have finally matured to the point where they don't rabidly froth at the mouth over every anime title they think they can make $5.
