Remember the good old days.... back when you could come home, get the remote, a bag of potato chips, sit down somewhere in front of the TV, and watch actual music videos? It's sad that for the most part those days are over.
What about "MTV" you say? Well what about it? They don't play any videos... go there right now if you don't believe me. Exactly HOW has something which is supposedly called "Music Television" evolved into something which no longer plays music. I got some news for the MTV people: play some VIDEOS for a change - and you can take all of your sorry ass pathetic mind devolving, intelligence insulting drivel you call programming, and stick it where the sun ain't shining. Remember the good ol days (like 5 years ago)? You had a little rap section, you had some alternative, you had some metal, request stuff, and general hours where they just played videos... that's right! they just played them because they were MTV! WOW! Now days you have the minuscule abridged version of the rap segment, the metal segment was dropped altogether, the alternative (ironically called alternative because lots of people listen to it) has managed to stay the same, and the rest? Well that's just MTV "programming".
Yeah sure they made a couple of shows that were interesting. Sometimes even I like to watch a little Celebrity Death Match, but what in the hell is the rest of it? You got CRAPPY soap operas, specials about sex, MTV news, and some idiotic specials such as "Choose or Lose" election garbage..
MTV has somehow managed to wedge itself as a teenage epicenter, and somehow evolved into some self perpetuating vehicle for its own personal agenda. MTV makes it's claim as a "cultural element" while brainwashing the masses on a regular basis to reflect MTV's perspective on things. Just watch MTV news. In between their brain dead insignificant parody of journalism segments, it's pretty easy to read between the lines and see what view they subtly push. But for more information, visit MTV's web site.... Ever been to their web site? You click on a link that says plain and clear AC/DC and it takes you to a page that has stuff on the Back street Boys... ARRRRRGH!!! THAT'S BRAINWASHING DAMMIT
And just when you think stuff couldn't get worse... there's the real world. Lets take a bunch of really annoying people, and stuff them in a house and watch them bitch at each other. Now why in the hell would I want to watch this? It might have been a novel concept at the beginning, but I get really sick of these idiots who obviously need to get a grip on reality, grow up, and learn how to co-habitate like civilized beings. But no, these people just sit and bitch at each other... and I get to watch - oh yeah baby! Look, if I want to listen to people bitch at each other in the same house, I'll go talk to my mom, I don't need to waste the diminishing period of my existence watching others whine.
MTV isn't the only station that has this problem though. Another good example is the history channel. What is on the history channel? 85% of the time it has to do with World War II. Now don't get me wrong, World War II is probably one of the biggest events in the history of mankind, and there are many lessons to be learned from WWII, but there is a LOT more to history than WWII. HISTORY... History has been around for about 3 trillion years (or whatever) and we're concentrating on a range of 15? (remember that they often do the aftermath and before WWII stuff too). Now cutting out the uninteresting couple trillion years, we get the earth at a good 5 billion. So we got a ratio of about 1 billion to 3 covered on the history channel. Hey guys, maybe we should even things out a little more instead of talking about things that no one cares about like "the Mystery of Hitler's Golden Toilet Seat" and such.
Well getting back to the music channel thing, there could possibly be some competition.... VH1? Heh, they've become as clueless as MTV. No they don't have the 'Real World' (thank God), instead they have all of these documentary programs about bands and such. Sure that was great and all, but after they started accelerating the program, they eventually ran out of interesting bands to talk about, and started talking about bands that basically no one cares about. That or they talk about bands that haven't even been around that long. Now VH1 can no longer fit all their older videos on one station... yup, they had to come out with VH1 classic. It's M2 all over again. From what I've heard M2 actually does play videos, but how in the hell would I know, I don't get the station, and no one I know (even on the Internet) does either.
So screw MTV, I just want to watch videos. And oddly enough the only time you ever do seem to catch a video is during #1 - the request thing, in which some VJ sits there and blabs for about 5 hours, and maybe they'll show 2 minutes of videos for every 15 minutes of them talking about nothing, and 8 minutes of commercials (and don't forget the MTV news segment). The other time they'll show a video is #2 - after making the video... yeah they spend about 25 minutes talking about how they made the video, and as a reward... THEY ACTUALLY PLAY ONE! So if you look at those two, it doesn't take you long to realize, that your never going to see any INTERESTING or NEW videos; you know, like a video that isn't completely mainstream from a band that everyone has heard of. Don't get me wrong, I like to watch Brittany Spears shake it as much as any guy does, but sometimes I wish that I could see some variety in the videos.
As a side note, I actually did write this before it was eluded to on South Park. I admit I had a good laugh at the show. "Everything we do and everything we say is cool, because we define what is cool, because we're cool". - MTV Yeah, uh huh. And people wonder why MP3's are so popular on the Internet... maybe because we can get what we want that way... actual music.
And here's another thing to think about. What ARE music videos? Yeah, music and video together, I know that. But really music videos are advertisements for you to purchase the album. Music companies are willing to spend thousands upon thousands of dollars to make a video just so you buy an album. So how come the music industry throws a hissy fit if people download them? And how come they want to CHARGE you money so you can download them? It's a strange world we live in, but I guess that corporate greed can truly make you an idiot. Next thing you know they'll force you to watch TV commercials then pay to have seen them.
